“When He Comes (Part 2/2)” - Luke 3:15-22

Sermon series:  Right-side up Kingdom
Sermon Title:  When He Comes Pt. 2
Scripture: Luke 3:15-22

Introduction

Jesus brought about a counter-cultural way to live life, with God’s Kingdom as the aim of it. We see how God’s plan to redeem His people started from the very beginning: from creation, into the fall with Adam and Eve, to them being banished from Eden, to God’s covenant with Abraham to bring about restoration for His people – all culminating with the Word as found in Luke.

“Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.” (Luke 3:4)

With the coming of the Lord, all will be turned upside down. Those who are prideful, powerful, and comfortable will be brought low. Those who are poor, weak, hungry, and humble will be lifted up.

Overview:

There is a call for repentance for us. That is our response as we prepare for God to come. How do we do this?

We look towards the One who has already come.

  • John is one of the greatest individuals regarded by Jesus Himself, but Jesus is even greater than he!

  • He is the One who died on our behalf, for our sins. He died in our place and rose on the third day!

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22)

Jesus submits himself to baptism so we can recognize that He is the One!

  • As Jesus was praying, the heavens were opened. God is revealing something that has not been revealed before.

  • Jesus being fully human, dwelt among us with the power of the Holy Spirit. So that we may find hope and in the power of His divinity.

God has sent his Son Jesus Christ for us, so that we may walk in his footsteps on the path of righteousness. We are at His right hand and we receive the hope of eternal life and share in His glory.

Sermon reflection questions:

  1. How have you chosen to live in a counter-cultural way, remembering God’s Kingdom as the centre of your actions and desires?

  2. Have you thought about when Jesus comes in His justice and wrath, how will you respond and account for your life, before His righteousness?

  3. Do you routinely reflect on your sins of commission (the evil we commit) and sins of omission (the commands from God we do not do), and genuinely lift up your repentance for the One who gave Himself up for you?
