Outflow to the Marginalized

2 Samuel 9 (Reading from vv. 1-3)
And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.”

A KING SEEKS THE FORGOTTEN
4 Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. (2 Samuel 4:4)
7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” (2 Samuel 9:7)
THE GREATER KING WELCOMES US TO HIS TABLE
7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” (2 Samuel 9:7)
David says to Mephibosheth “Do not fear...”
Jesus says to us “Do not fear...”
...because I am with you.
(Mt. 14:27; Mk. 6:50; Jn. 6:20)
...because God cares for you.
(Mt. 10:31; Lk. 12:7, 12:32)
...because I have authority over death.
(Mk. 5:36; Lk. 8:50; Mt. 17:17, 28:10)
David has authority as king of Israel.
Jesus has authority as God.
“I and the Father are one.” (Jn. 10:30)
David displays kindness (Hbr. hesed) through restoration of inheritance and relationship.
Jesus displays kindness through restoration of eternal inheritance and divine relationship.
David remembered Jonathan’s covenant with him.
(1 Samuel 18:3)
Jesus is the High Priest of a better, New Covenant
(Hebrews 9:15)
David invites Mephibosheth to the king’s table.
Jesus invites us ...to the communion table
...to know the Father’s Will (John 15:15)
...to the future marriage supper of Groom (Christ) and the Bride (Church)

THE KING’S TABLE BECOMES OUR TABLE
Our dignity is never something we earn—it is something God gives. Every person bears God's image and therefore possesses equal dignity, regardless of ability, productivity, or independence.
David... called for Mephibosheth ⟶ Restored Mephibosheth’s inheritance ⟶ Invited him to his table
Relationship ⟶ Relief ⟶ Participation : Belonging
Connect ⟶ Share ⟶ Equip ⟶ Disciple-making : Discipleship
