Recovering from Spiritual Depression Part 1 - 1 Kings 19:1-8

 
 

1. Recognizing the cause of spiritual depression.

  • “After great victories, there are many vulnerabilities.” (Unknown)

  • a. When you are disappointed.

    b. When you are fatigue.

    c. When you loosen up.

  • Running with borrowed energy

2. Recognizing the symptoms of spiritual depression.

a. Listening to distorted truth. 

  • “Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the loife of one of them by this time tomorrow.’” (v.2)

  • “Depression whispers something in your ear and it sounds as if it represents reality in the moment.” (C. Michael Patton)

b. Running away.  

  • “Then he was afraid, and he arose” (v.3)

  • “For I am no better than my fathers” (v.4)

  • “He asked that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life.’” (v.4)

3. Receiving God’s provision of rest. 

a. Providing rest.

  • “He lay down and slept under a broom tree.” (v.5 a)

b. Providing loving touch. 

  • “An angel touched him.” (v.5 b)

c. Providing nourishment.

  • “Arise and eat!” (v.5 c) 

  • “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
