“Regenerating Power of the Holy Spirit” - John 3:1-10

  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (v.5)

  • “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (v.8)

1. Regeneration is done to us, not we do.

  • “New birth is not something that we do, but something that is done to us!” (John Piper)

  • “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (v.2)

2. Regeneration is new life, not improved life.

  • Regeneration – ‘regenerare’ in Latin

  • “This man came to Jesus by night” (v.2)

  • “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

  • “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.” (v.1)

3. Regeneration is examined by spiritual DNA.

  • “That which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (v.6)

  • “Everyone who is born of the Spirit” (v.8)

  • “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
