“Why Easter Matters”

SERMON Title: Why Easter Matters
SCRIPTURE: Romans 8:31-35 (ESV)

Introduction:

Today on Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe Jesus died on the cross not only to take away our sins but also that He has resurrected from the dead. The reality of the resurrection is where our energy, time, and effort within our faith through prayer, meditation on Scripture, attending church, offering up our service, etc. - to praise the living and risen King.

In today’s sermon, beyond the fact and evidence of Christ’s resurrection, it matters to us today just as much as it did those years ago.

Overview:

The resurrection of Jesus matters to us because:

  • We can live forgiven lives.

    • We are clearly condemned because of our nature as sinners yet the condemnation of our destruction and death has been lifted because of Jesus’ resurrection. (Romans 8:34)

    • Jesus continues to intercede for us into the present day.

  • We are assured that Jesus can transform our lives everyday.

    • In addition to being forgiven, we are filled with the mighty power of God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead. (Philippians 3:10)

    • The power we receive to live transformed lives comes because of the power of the resurrection. (Galatians 2:20)

  • We now have a living hope.

    • Our hope is not wishful thinking but a sure and confident expectation that our future is in His hands.

    • Our expectation is that we will one day be reconciled with Him forever.

Application:

Pray to be:

  1. Restored to have faith in the resurrected One.

  2. Discover hope again by living by the power of His resurrection.

  3. The reality of Easter Sunday’s Good News lives on in our daily lives not only today.

  4. Trusting and knowing that the power of Christ’s resurrection is that which gives us hope and meaning in our faith in Christ.

Sermon reflection questions:

  1. Does the resurrection of Jesus act functionally and have impact in your life today?

  2. Which of the 3 points stood out as a dominant understanding in the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

  3. What are some areas of sin that you have not fully given up to Jesus to demonstrate His resurrecting power over and free you from the shame and guilt?
