Called Out For God’s Mission #4
#4: People Who walk in God’s Way
OPENING: Believing in God means walking in God’s way.
“For I have chosen hi, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (v.19)
1. WALKING IN GOD’S WAY AS DEMONSTRATING THE SAMPLES OF GOD’S BLESSING.
“Then the Lord said, ‘Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave’” (v.20)
Sin, Separation, Save
Righteousness – (sedeq)
“This is not in some abstract or absolute way, but rather according to the demands of the particular relationship or situation one is in. It means doing what is right in this relationship, or according to the priorities and expectations of this situation. It is not an abstract norm, but a particular sense of what is means to do the right thing, a parent, as a child, as a judge, as a king, as a child, as a worshiper, and so on. Righteousness is doing all that one ought to do in the given circumstances and relationships.” (Christopher Wright, The Mission of God’s People)
2. WALKING IN GOD’S WAY AS PURSUING A FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD.
“The Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do’” (v.17)
“Then Abraham drew near and said, ‘Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” (v.23)
“Then Abraham drew near” (v.23)
“Again he spoke” (v.29)
“Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak.” (v.30)
“When they go low, we go high.” (Michelle Obama)
CLOSING: Life flows through the people who walk in God’s way.
