Running the Race Together #6
HebrewS 5:1-10

“I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” (1 Corinthians 9:23-25)

“The source of eternal salvation” (v.9 b)

The Essence, The Identity, The Calling

 1. The Essence of the Church

“For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.” (v.1)

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

God’s own possession = Peculiar People

2. The Lordship of the Church

“The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’” (Psalm 110:4)

“To offer gifts and sacrifices for sins” (v.1 b)

3. The Calling of the Church

“And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.” (v.4)

“You are my Son, today I have begotten you” (v.5b)

“And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.” (John 6:39)
