Overflowing Power Through Weakness

Rev. Jason Noh

2 Corinthians 13:3-9

since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for.

Opening: God’s powerful works are beyond our weak limitations.

Pouring out the power of joy abiding in Christ through our weakness.

“For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.” (v.4)

Leading through weakness

Failures

Feelings

Faults

Frustrations

Fears

"The fact that you are graduating from Harvard University suggests that you are not very well-acquainted with failure. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success. Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential." (J. K. Rowling)

Testing our faith and strengthen through our weakness.

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? – unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (v.5)

The five essential truths about maturity (Richard Rohr)

1) Life is hard

2) You are not that important

3) Your life is not about you

4) You are not in control

5) You are going to die

Being perfected through our weakness.

“For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for.” (v.9)

Benefit of Doubt

Closing: The deeper we come to know God, the more His power is poured into us.
