Overflowing Grace: Handling Criticism with Grace

Rev. Jason Noh

2 Corinthians 6:3-13

We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. 13 In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also.

Opening: There are times we receive criticism even when we walk with Jesus.

“Ministry would be great if it weren’t for all the people.”

Taking it as an opportunity to reflect if there is any hindrance.

“We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry” (v.3)

Training to lower ourselves.

“As servants of God we commend ourselves” (v.4)

Widening our hearts in the midst of criticism.

“In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also.” (v.13)

“Either be silent, or say something better than silence.” (Pythagoras, Ancient Greek Philosopher)

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be

judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.” (Matthew 7:1-2)

Closing: As we overcome criticism, we will experience growth and maturity.
