Heart Detox #5: Overcoming the nature of Shame and Blame

Opening: Shame and blame are the immediate responses to our sinful nature.

1.      UNDERSTANDING SHAME THROUGH A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE.

“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.” (v.11-12)

Guilt & Shame

Shame-Based Culture – Motivating based on shame

“Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.” (Genesis 3:7)

“Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is hurtful.” (Benjamin Franklin)

2.      UNDERSTANDING BLAME THROUGH A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE.

“The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.’” (Genesis 3:12)

3.      TAKING OUR SHAME AND BLAME ON THE CROSS.

“But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible.” (v.13)

Closing: Let us break free from the bondage of shame and blame through the power of the cross.
