Behold His Character, Trust His Word, and Depend on His Grace
Passage: Nehemiah 10.28-31
Date: December 18, 2022
As the people of God begin to settle in the rebuilt city, they take their time to reflect upon and renew their covenant with the Lord. One of the most prominent parts of the covenant is keeping the Sabbath. This passage and sermon will teach us the importance of Sabbath and the Law of God. What is the purpose of these and do they apply to us today?
The purpose of the Law of God, including things like Sabbath, is manifold. For this sermon, three purposes will be explained: (1) the Law of God teaches and reminds us of God's character, (2) the Law of God is to be trusted and obeyed so that we can better our lives, and (3) the Law of God exposes our sin and our need for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
When we look at the Law of God as having these three purposes, we must ask ourselves if we are responding accordingly. More specifically, when we do "Christian" actions (e.g., going to Sunday service, small group; reading the Bible and praying; etc.), are these three things happening? Sadly, many churches today are too focused on tangential things, even if those things are good. Oftentimes the life of the church is filled with exciting and noble events, but are void of these three ultimate purposes.
Let us therefore pray that every aspect of our church will (1) point us to the character of God; (2) compel us to trust and obey the Word of God; and (3) stir our hearts to become more aware of our sin and need for Christ.
