Unexpected Redemption

1 Kings 16.29-17.1

Especially in this portion of 1 Kings, we see God's people in a state of darkness. They disrespect God's Word and have been led to idolatry, especially under the influence of one evil king after another. Despite their miserable state, God still orchestrates redemption for his people, but in an unexpected way. God raises a prophet from an obscure area. Before God saves his people, he actually sends a drought that lasts three years! Despite the seemingly random way that God saves his people in this instance, his power and faithfulness are undeniable. God will always rescue his people.

In our lives, we too find ourselves in moments of idolatry and rebellion. At times we also neglect God's Word. Yet God is faithful to his people who are in Christ. Because of what Christ has done, we are guaranteed that he will use the random, obscure, and unexpected details in our lives to redeem us. Especially in our context, God has even used the lockdown to deepen our appreciation for Jesus Christ and his gospel. Therefore, let us place our trust in God's unwavering faithfulness toward us and make the most of the opportunities that he has given us to grow in him.
